Upcoming hike on September 21, 2024
Well, summer has finally departed, taking with it–we hope!–its hottest, muggiest, and buggiest days. Our first hike of 2024-2025 is coming up Saturday, Sept. 21, starting with the marvelous, state-wide Mountains to the Sea Trail. Since this is a 3.6 mile section (one way) of the MST’s Segment 10, we will hike half (out and back) in September and the other half in November, when we can also take a quick detour into the Annie Wilkerson Nature Preserve. Parking and restrooms are available at the Falls Lake Dam tailrace on Old Falls of Neuse.A few important notes:
-
- Barring risky weather or other unforeseen changes, all hikes will occur on the third Saturdays, September through May, approximately 8:30 to 11 a.m. including driving time
- Our pace is about 2.5 miles per hour: brisk enough with time for nature spotting and short breaks.
- Each month, we aim for a 3 to 3.5 mile hike, out and back.
- Tentatively, that schedule with general trail locations–all a 15-minute or less drive from St. John’s– are as follows:
-
- Sept. 21, MST, Falls Lake Dam tailrace, Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh
- Oct. 19, Wake Forest Reservoir Park, Wake Forest
- Nov. 16, MST, Raven Ridge Rd, Raleigh
- Dec. 21, Blue Jay Point Park, off Six Forks Rd., Raleigh
- Jan. 18, Shinleaf Recreation Area, off New Light Road, WF
- Feb. 15, Honeycutt Trail, Raven Ridge Rd., Raleigh
- March 15, B.W. Wells, Bent Rd., WF
- April 19, Durant Nature Park, off Durant Rd., Raleigh
- May 17, Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve, off Ligon Mill Rd., Wake Forest
- Car-poolers meet in the St. John’s parking lot at 8:30 a.m.; self-drivers meet at the designated trailhead by 8:50
- Everyone should wear good, close-toed walking shoes and bring water. A hat and bandana can be helpful too
- Hiking poles are recommended for trails, most of which have become rooty and rocky from wear and tear.
- Please let me know a day or so in advance if you plan to hike with us so we can look for you, either at the church or at the trailhead. My cell is 919=522-7917; that’s the best way to connect with me on hiking day.
