As part of St. John’s Episcopal Church’s celebration of Black History Month, The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr. will preach on Sunday, February 6. Dr. Forbes has spent his lifelong, spirit-filled career challenging people of faith and moral courage to stand up nonviolently against hurtful policies that disproportionately impact the poor, the ill, children, immigrants, communities of color, and religious minorities.
Dr. Forbes is the retired Senior Pastor Emeritus of Riverside Church, New York City. Prior to his 16-year pastorate of Riverside Church, his preaching career carried him from small, rural pulpits across North Carolina to the prestigious Brown and Stockman Professor of Preaching Chair at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In recognition of his distinguished preaching career and his charismatic style, Time Magazine called Dr. Forbes a “preacher’s preacher.” His career includes being named National Minister of the Drum Major Institute, the Harry Emerson Fosdick Distinguished Professor at Union Theological Seminary, and President of the Healing of the Nations Foundation.
This worship service will be a time to reflect on our past and present, and hear again God’s call to build a better future for our entire community and nation. Dr. Forbes’ message will inspire all to be active builders of the “Beloved Community.” Dr. Forbes will be joined by his spouse, Bettye, who has had a long, accomplished career as a Music Director.
In addition to our regular offertory that day, we will take a special offering to support Dr. Forbes in his inspiring preaching and teaching ministry that continues long into his retirement from parish ministry.
