As I begin to settle in and get to know the wonderful staff, parents, and children, I have been thinking to myself that there couldn’t have been a better time to start than this month. My first couple of weeks have been a balancing act of becoming acquainted with the day-to-day activities of the preschool and how those activities will become a part of my role as director. My favorite part of the position so far has been watching the summer campers participate in yoga, water day fun, launch rocket ships, create artwork, and more. It’s been a great introduction to how the teachers interact with, and truly love their kids.
Now, with the preschool building quiet and the classrooms empty, I’ll take the time to tackle the five-page to-do list (no kidding!) in preparation for the new school year. Lisa left big shoes to fill and to quote Fr. Mawethu, there have been moments of feeling like I’m “drinking from a fire hydrant.” Without a doubt, it is a lot to take in. But I am also comforted each day by the little things: the peace of working on church grounds and with a community of faith; stepping outside and taking in the gardens; and the welcoming presence of Cosmo the cat. All these things have helped in some way give me the peace to continue and get organized for the return of the children in September.
