The Great Vigil of Easter, Sat Apr 8
New at St. John’s this year!
8 PM
The Great Vigil is the first celebration of Easter in our tradition (see pp. 284-95 in the Book of Common Prayer) though not all churches celebrate it each year. It is arguably the most beautiful and complex liturgy in the prayer book. It begins outdoors in darkness, lasts 90 minutes or so, and consists of four parts:
The Service of Light (kindling of new fire, lighting the Paschal candle, the chanting of the Exsultet);
The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms, canticles, and prayers);
Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and
The Eucharist
The Eucharist begins with the proclamation of Easter, “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” and the response, “The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!” accompanied by shouts and bell-ringing and general noisemaking to mark the occasion!
After the Eucharist, stick around for a bit of champagne, and some fresh strawberries served with cream (courtesy of our new Special Events Team)!
Easter Sunday, April 9
Easter is the central feast of the Christian year. We’ll celebrate with beautiful music and extend a warm welcome to many local families who will join us; and afterward, an outdoor Coffee Hour and fun-filled Easter Egg Hunt!!!
